Position Announcement

The non-profit environmental health network, Coming Clean, is seeking to hire a Communications Strategist to join its team.

Coming Clean is a national environmental health network of 200 organizations and an affiliate national environmental justice network working to reform the chemical and fossil fuels industries so they are no longer a source of harm, and secure systemic changes that allow a safe chemical and clean energy economy to flourish.


Position Summary Description:

The Communications Strategist is an important member of the Coming Clean team and reports to the Program Director. The Communications Strategist leads Coming Clean’s communications and media operations, and is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy to advance the mission, vision and initiatives of Coming Clean. The position works closely with Coming Clean leadership, staff, members and partners to increase visibility of issues, campaigns/initiatives and the Coming Clean network as a whole. The Communications Strategist ensures consistent presence and messaging of work across multiple communication channels including social media, website, and media relations. In addition, the position provides targeted support and media training for grassroots and other network members, as needed.

The Communications Strategist is a full-time, salaried position with benefits.

Primary Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Engaging in national and regional cultivation of relevant media outlets, journalists and analysts across all media formats, with an emphasis on growing reporter relationships in the mainstream, ethnic and trade media sectors.
  • Drafting and disseminating written communications materials, using clear, compelling core messages.
  • Pitching journalists on Coming Clean issues and events.
  • Coordinating in-person media events and press conference calls.
  • Planning and executing a digital strategy for Coming Clean to ensure the network’s external messages and priorities are being effectively communicated through various social media platforms.
  • Directing the development, dissemination, and maintenance of all print and digital collateral for use by Coming Clean, member groups and partners.
  • Staying abreast of general media trends regarding Coming Clean’s issues, and monitoring the news cycle for rapid response opportunities.
  • Providing media training and mentoring for grassroots partner organizations and leaders.

Position Qualifications:

  • You have a minimum of 3 years work experience in communications.
  • You have a demonstrated track record in the design and execution of multi-faceted communications strategies that advance campaigns/initiatives and increase organization visibility.
  • You have experience in and knowledge of relevant issues including environmental health, chemicals pollution, Environmental Justice, clean energy and climate change.
  • You are a strong project manager, organized and able to prioritize and tackle multiple tasks at once within established deadlines.
  • You have exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills with the ability to write for a variety of audiences.
  • You have a passion for innovative storytelling and experience designing and producing a wide variety of print and digital content.
  • You are adept at managing relationships and working collaboratively and respectfully with individuals and organizations of diverse backgrounds and with diverse priorities.
  • You are creative, self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • You have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in other education and/or experience.

Preferred Locations: Brattleboro, VT, Portland, ME and Philadelphia, PA

Salary Range & Benefits: $45,000 - $70,000 annual salary

Benefits include a retirement program, health insurance reimbursement arrangement, life insurance, disability insurance and vacation and unplanned leave.
